- Comcast Xfinity (Primarily Uses Cable – Coaxial Connection)
Xfinity is one of the largest cable internet providers in the United States, and its setup process is relatively standardized.
1.1 WAN Connection Type
Dynamic IP / DHCP:This is the default and only required setting. Your router’s WAN port should be configured to “Dynamic IP” or “Obtain an IP automatically.” The router will automatically acquire a public IP address from Xfinity’s network via DHCP. No username or password is needed (not PPPoE).
1.2 Device Activation
→ Initial Activation Required: When connecting a new modem or gateway (whether it’s your own or Xfinity’s) for the first time, you must activate it via the Xfinity App or activation website (xfinity.com/activate). During this process, Xfinity’s system will detect and register your device’s MAC address.
→ Replacing a Router: If you’re only replacing your personal router behind an already activated modem, reactivation is usually not required, but following the correct power-cycling sequence is important.
1.3 Using Your Own Router
→ Bridge Mode is Key: If you’re using an Xfinity xFi Wireless Gateway, you need to log in to its management interface (typically 10.0.0.1) and enable “Bridge Mode.” Once enabled, the gateway’s routing and Wi-Fi functions will be disabled, and it will operate solely as a modem.
→ Connection Method: After enabling bridge mode, connect the WAN port of your own router to any LAN port on the Xfinity gateway. Only devices connected to your personal router will have internet access.
1.4 MAC Address Cloning
→ Generally Not Required: Modern Xfinity networks do not rely on the MAC address of the first connected device; service is tied to the modem itself. However, in rare cases (e.g., when a direct PC connection works but the router does not), MAC address cloning can be used as a troubleshooting step.
